More than 2,600 Volunteers roll up their sleeves to help Make Change Happen on Comcast Cares Day
On April 21, more than 2,600 volunteers registered to make change happen in Houston for Comcast’s annual Cares Day. Houston Region employees, along with their family and friends, as well as dozens of community volunteers, impacted 11 projects sites across the city. Adding to this year’s activities was the Cares Day Blood Drive and Kids’ Meal Project, which provided an opportunity for employees to donate resources to aid needy patients and color lunch bags for underprivileged children.
More than 2,600 local Comcast NBCUniversal more than employees and their families and friends volunteered at 13 community projects throughout the Greater Houston area as part of Comcast’s 17th annual Comcast Cares Day.
Adding to the excitement of Cares Day in Houston, were several Comcast corporate employees, who traveled from Philadelphia to volunteer alongside Houston Comcasters at The Houston Food Bank. Among the group was Dalila Wilson-Scott, Senior Vice President, Community Impact, President of Comcast & NBCU Foundations, City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson and other elected officials. During the event, Wilson-Scott and Houston Region Vice President of External Affairs Ray Purser presented a $25,000 donation to Brian Greene, CEO of the Houston Food Bank, as the Food Bank was one of this year’s project sites.
Throughout the Houston area, Comcast employee volunteers worked to impact the community through a variety of project sites. This year, in partnership with Trees for Houston and the Arbor Day Foundation, 160 trees were planted along Halls Bayou in an effort to revitalize the park. In addition, a number of of our local schools across several districts with served as project sites, where employees worked to enhance school grounds through landscaping and beatification support. Comcast Houston employees also provided tremendous support and manpower to paint neglected walls, plant shrubs and trees to enhance the landscape at several project sites including the Boys & Girls Clubs in Fort Bend, Covenant House and AAMA. Volunteers also spent the day tirelessly working to improve the facility and grounds of Camp Hope, a leading housing treatment facility dedicated to improving the lives of U.S. veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The day continued at BARC, where a team of dedicated volunteers spent the day at the animal shelter walking dogs, cleaning chicken coops and cleaning up the common area. The Comcast Houston Region was again proud to rally as a team to support and impact several non-profit organizations in the area. Our company’s effort was nationwide and included more than 100,000 volunteers.
Through the company’s NBC Universal division, Comcast Cares Day extended across the world in several countries, making Cares Day a worldwide event that “trended” on Twitter and several social media outlets. The work completed during Comcast Cares Day will help ensure brighter days for the communities we serve and truly exhibits that Comcast “cares” about our community. Thank you to our employee, community partners and countless volunteers for making this year’s Cares Day a success!
