Comcast Partners with Mayor’s Office for Annual Back to School Festival

The 11th Annual Mayor’s Back to School Fest is scheduled to take place Saturday, August 14, from 8a.m. – 4p.m. in the yellow lot at NRG Park. Houston-area elementary school students and their families who need assistance will have an opportunity to “drive-through” and receive some of the tools they need to start the school year off right – including information about Comcast’s Internet Essentials program.

The festival may look different, but each family who attends the drive-through distribution will receive a backpack filled with school supplies, along with masks and sanitizers. In addition to providing 25,000 filled backpacks, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events has partnered with the Houston Food Bank to provide food to the families of these students, free of charge.

“Many Houston families simply cannot afford school supplies, and the challenges are greater this year because of the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Families have been hit hard by health issues or unemployment,” said Mayor Turner. “I thank our sponsors for stepping up to the plate to help. Due to their generosity, thousands of kids will have the tools they need for a successful start to the school year.”

Due to COVID-19, this new procedure for obtaining school supplies was implemented in 2020 with the sole purpose of keeping the public safe and socially distanced. That commitment to safety remains a priority for this year’s event.

Comcast has been a sponsor of the festival for many years. If you need Back-to-School assistance, you can register here
