Broadband Expansion Brings Fiber Internet to Fort Bend County’s Rural Communities

It’s been a long time coming, but the wait is finally over. Our Xfinity and Comcast Business fiber network is now live in Kendleton! After four years of planning and collaboration, local leaders gathered last week for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the milestone. Take a look at the video below to see the Internet connectivity celebration!

“This is the first site of several sites in Fort Bend County where we are bringing internet access to our rural communities,” said Pct. 4 Commissioner Dexter McCoy.

This milestone marks the beginning of a transformative broadband expansion across rural and underserved areas of Fort Bend County. The $18M project is part of a broader effort to bring fiber connectivity to Kendelton, Needville, Thompsons and Simonton. The funding was made possible through a public-private partnership with Fort Bend County and the tech leader.

Fort Bend County Judge K.P. George said technology is a necessity not a luxury is his fast-growing county. He said it’s not just about internet access, but about educational and business opportunities.

“This expansion ensures that every resident, no matter what your zip code is, you’re going to have broadband access in Fort Bend County.”

What’s Happening Now?

Construction crews with our business partner Tak Broadband are hard at work in Needville, installing fiber lines. The cities of Simonton and Thompsons are next on the list. By the end of 2026, roughly 3,000 homes and businesses across the four communities will have access to the most advanced fiber technology available.

Why This Matters

Pct. 4 Commissioner Dexter McCoy said his constituents have been asking for fast and reliable internet options since 2021, which led commissioner’s court to seek out a solution. McCoy said it’s all about connecting people to opportunities they have been locked out of for far too long.

“Prior to this expansion folks had to have these mobile gateways. It was archaic technology that was not reliable,” Commissioner McCoy said. “And when you think about folks trying to do video conferencing for work, they didn’t have stable internet connection. Having access to internet is critical for the growth of our economy and growth of their communities. People do not go where there is not access to their basic resources.”

What This Means for You

“This was an opportunity for us to introduce Xfinity services to the communities,” said Jerome Butler, vice president of technical operations and network for Comcast Texas. “It’s about making Internet available to those who don’t have it today.”

Once the Xfinity and Comcast Business networks are live in Needville, Thompsons and Simonton, residents and businesses will have access to gig+ internet speeds, tv, streaming, mobile and security services.

Comcast also contributed $45,000 this year to help support local non-profits that make Fort Bend County stronger.
